How to Choose the Right Bed for Your Dog or Cat

A good bed does more than give your dog or cat somewhere to sleep — it supports their joints, helps them settle faster, and can even reduce anxiety in nervous pets. With so many shapes, fillings and fabrics on the market, though, it's easy to pick the wrong one. Here's what actually matters.

Start with size, not looks

A bed that's too small won't let your pet stretch out, and one that's too large can feel exposed and less secure — especially for anxious dogs and cats who prefer a snug, enclosed space. Measure your pet lying down, fully stretched, and add about 10–15 cm in each direction. For a dog or cat that likes to curl up, a rounded or donut-shaped bed with a raised rim, like our calming donut bed, tends to feel safer than a flat mat.

Match the filling to how they sleep

Dogs and cats with joint issues, seniors, and larger breeds benefit from thicker, supportive padding that doesn't flatten after a few weeks. Pets who just want a soft spot to nap during the day can do well with a lighter, more breathable fill. Either way, look for a removable, washable cover — pet bedding picks up hair, dander and odor fast, and a bed you can't wash is a bed you'll eventually stop using.

Non-slip matters more than you'd think

On hardwood or tile floors, a bed without a grippy base will slide every time your pet jumps in or shifts around, which is annoying for them and for you. A non-slip, water-resistant base keeps the bed in place and protects the floor underneath from accidents or spilled water.

Signs it's time for a new one

• The filling stays flattened even after fluffing it
• You can't get stains or odor out, even after washing
• Your pet has started sleeping on the floor next to it instead of in it
